Welsh-based education provider, Our Classroom Climate (OCC), is proud to be partnering with Principality Building Society to deliver climate education across eleven Welsh schools. This initiative strengthens Principality’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reinforces its focus on operating as a sustainability conscious business.

Tony Smith, Chief Impact and Governance Officer at Principality Building Society said:

“We’re delighted to be supporting this changemaking programme, empowering and inspiring young learners to get ‘hands-on’ with climate science, sparking their curiosity about future technologies and helping them take their first steps to becoming environmentally responsible citizens.”

Designed for primary-age pupils, the programme, which covers critical scientific topics such as extreme weather, rising sea levels, biodiversity, the greenhouse effect, the carbon and water cycles, and the human impact on the environment since the industrial revolution, aligns with the national curriculum across the UK and Ireland and is an ideal companion to the Department for Education’s (DfE) sustainability and climate change strategy.

The first school to benefit from this exciting programme was Oakfield Primary School in St. Mellons, Cardiff.

Joseph, a pupil at the school said:

I loved the science session yesterday because I was able to do an experiment! I learnt about carbon dioxide, what a liquid tree is, and algae!"

Kian also reflected on his experience. "I enjoyed it when we were learning about greenhouse gases and the liquid trees. I found the teaching videos and quiz fun and a good way to learn! We separated the carbon from the dioxide and became Carbon Catchers! It was really fun!”

Mark Douglas, Founder of OCC, was inspired by the students’ engagement:

"It was fantastic to visit Oakfield Primary and introduce the students to the fun side of science. We immediately saw some science superstars in the making! All the children were engaged and excited to learn about climate change and the science behind it. Their enthusiasm was truly inspiring."

OCC’s four-module programme consists of 24 interactive lessons, including 11 core experiments and almost 100 activity ideas. Each lesson is designed for use on whiteboards, PCs, or tablets and can be delivered as part of a sequence or as standalone resources.

In addition to teaching the science behind climate change, the programme introduces pupils to ‘future technologies’ showing them how to power cars and mobile phones with just water - by building a simple hydrogen fuel cell in class. A standout feature of the programme involves cleaning the air in classrooms using space station science, further enhancing the students’ understanding of environmental sustainability.
